Remedial Massage Therapy

Remedial Massage Therapy is the assessment and treatment of soft tissue dysfunctions that cause pain and restrict human movement.

Remedial Massage Therapy is broken up into 2 areas. The Assessment and the Treatment.

Assessment

This takes place first and may require you to remove a limited amount of clothing so that your Remedial Massage Therapist can start the assessment. This part of the treatment involves the recording of comprehensive history, structural observations, palpation, motion testing and a range of other physical testing procedures. Based on the assessment, the Remedial Massage Therapist develops a ‘working diagnosis’ and prepares a treatment plan.

Treatment

The treatment part consists of a range of techniques that will best improve your range of movement, dysfunction, condition and achieve the results that you and your Remedial Massage Therapist are aiming to achieve. Techniques may involve;

Massage
Long stokes effleurage, kneading, tapotement, vibrations, friction techniques all performed to move superficial layers of the muscles, combined with active and passive movements of the joints.

Neuromuscular Techniques
NMT encourage a restoration of functional normality and focuses on deactivating myofascial Trigger Points within the muscle. Another object of NMT is the normalise hypertonic and or fibrotic tissues within the muscle or the joint with mobilisation techniques.

Myofascial Release
Soft Tissue manipulations that facilitate a stretch into the restricted myofascial regions. The technique uses sustained pressure which engages the elastic components of fascial tissue. This pressure is held till the tissue releases. Fascia is also known as the membrane that surrounds the muscle.

Muscle Energy Techniques
The muscle energy technique is a non-invasive method of manual therapy. It is said to help with relieving pain, fixing joint issues, reducing edema and improving a person’s range of motion. It is based on reciprocal inhibition, which is a theory that describes how muscles react. Based on reciprocal inhibition, the muscles located to one side of a joint relax when the muscles on the other side of the joint contract.

Positional Release Techniques
This is a manual technique for muscle pain and spasm, which involves restoring muscle tone and enhances circulation. With PRT, the muscle is placed i a passive (therapists controlled) shortened position and then held for approximately 90 seconds. Results being the muscle will be more relaxed to provide a more effective treatment.

Mobilisation Techniques
A repeated applied force at the motion barrier with the goal of increasing the range of motion in an articulation with hypo mobility.

Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation
Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation, or otherwise known as PNF, is a strengthening technique used in therapeutic exercise that is based on human anatomy and neurophysiology. It is used to increase strength, flexibility, and ROM.

Therapeutic Exercise
Therapeutic exercise is a means by which joint and tissue mobility can be improved by exercise of varying types and intensities. Great for rehabilitation or disabilities to restore and improve physical function.

Key benefits of Remedial Massage

The stimulation to the blood supply allowing toxins in the muscles to be removed; the calming of the peripheral nervous system to ease pain and discomfort; and the toning and relaxing of muscles to improve joint mobility. An improvement to the health of the cells, the repairing of tissues, and the easing of stiffness and tension can also be experienced through therapeutic relaxation.
Massage is believed to activate the parasympathetic nervous system which stimulates the release of endorphins and serotonin. Endorphins are an analgesic compound which reflects a sense of well-being and works as a “natural pain reliever”. Serotonin helps regulate intestinal movements and acts on the central nervous system where it enhances our moods. Improved quality of sleep is another great side effect of massage.

Muscular and skeletal dysfunctions often addressed with Remedial Massage include Fibrositis, Spondylitis, Arthritis, frozen shoulder, muscular cramps, Whiplash, muscular atrophy, sports and dancing injuries.
